Compare scope, not totals
Two quotations for the same renovation can differ by tens of thousands and both be honest. The difference is almost always in what each one includes.
Before comparing the numbers, check that each quotation names the same things:
- Which materials and finishes, by specification rather than by category
- What surface preparation is included before painting or tiling
- Whether hacking, disposal and site protection are priced in
- How variations will be issued and approved
A quotation that lists a single lump sum against a one-line description is not cheaper. It is just less specific, and the gap tends to close during construction.
